Once there were two mice, and they were friends. One mouse lived in the country, and the other mouse lived in the city. Many years later, the country mouse saw the city mouse and said, “Do come and see me at my house in the country.” So the city mouse followed him. The country mouse led the city mouse to his house which lay in a field, and he took out all the wonderful food. But the city mouse said, “This food is not good, and your house is not good, either. Why do you live in a hole in the field? You should come and live in the city. You would live in a nice house made of stone. You would have nice food to eat. You must come and see me at my house in the city.”

The country mouse went to the house of the City mouse. It was a very good house. Nice food was set ready for them to eat. But just as they began to eat, they heard a great noise. The city mouse cried, “Run! Run! The cat is coming!” They ran away quickly and hid.

Soon afterwards, they came out. When they came out, the Country mouse said, “I do not like living in the city. I like living in my hole in the field. For it is nicer to be poor and happy, than to be rich and frightened.”

  The Wind And The Sun

One day the wind said to the sun, “Look at that man walking along the road. I can get his cloak off more quickly than you can.”

“We will see about that,” said the sun. “I will let you try first.”

So the wind tried to make the man take off his cloak. He blew and blew, but the man only pulled his cloak more closely around himself.

“I quit,” said the wind at last. “I cannot get his cloak off.” Then the sun tried. He shone as hard as he could. The man soon became hot and took off his cloak. Soon afterwards,he was so hot that he took off all his clothes and jumped into the river immediately.

A Brahmin, a member of the Hindu priest, had a great reputation for holiness, and received many presents so that he became rich.

One day, he took a fancy to dress himself as a poor peasant.

In this attire, he went into the market place but no one saluted him and no one gave him any presents.

The Brahmin then returned to his house and, dressing himself in rich garments, once more set out for the market place.

This time, everybody saluted him and made way for him and many handed him presents.

This was the usual custom when a holy Brahmin happened to make his appearance in the market place. Once again, the Brahmin returned to his home and changed his clothes.

Then, taking the rich garments, he set them up on a shrine near the market.

As he prostrates himself before them, cried continually: "O mighty garments, you are esteemed above all else in this world....

The people gathered round in wonder. And in time came to worship the clothes as this Brahmin was doing.

This custom has spread farther and farther. Now in many countries around the world, trendy and fashionable people do the same thing, though not, perhaps in the way as the Brahmin did.

So the boar came up and rushed at him with his tusks.

"Where do you like best to feed your flocks?" said a man to an old cow-herd.

"Here, sir, where the grass is neither too rich nor too poor, or else it is no use." "Why not?" asked the man.

"Do you hear that melancholy cry from the meadow there?" answered the shepherd, "that is the bittern; he was once a shepherd, and so was the hoopoe also,--I will tell you the story.

The bittern pastured his flocks on rich green meadows where flowers grew in abundance, so his cows became wild and unmanageable.

The hoopoe drove his cattle on to high barren hills, where the wind plays with the sand, and his cows became thin, and got no strength.

When it was evening, and the shepherds wanted to drive their cows homewards, the bittern could not get his together again; they were too high-spirited, and ran away from him.

He called, "Come, cows, come," but it was of no use; they took no notice of his calling.

The hoopoe, however, could not even get his cows up on their legs, so faint and weak had they become.

"Up, up, up," screamed he, but it was in vain, they remained lying on the sand.

That is the way when one has no moderation.

And to this day, though they have no flocks now to watch, the bittern cries, "Come, cows, come," and the hoopoe, "Up, up, up."

The ray of the warm sunlight told us that it was spring. A lion was sleeping peacefully in the forest.

While the lion was fast asleep, a mouse went on top of the lion. The bold mouse played happily on top of the lion. "Yuppie! This is really fun." The mouse ran around thumping and stomping here and there.

The lion was not able to sleep with all the racket. The lion knew that there was someone on top of him. So, the lion made a surprise attack and rolled on the ground.

And the mouse fell over. When the lion saw the mouse he was relieved and said, "Whew! It was only a mouse."

However, far away a fox had seen the scene. The fox the laughed mockingly to the lion and said, "Youre as big as a mountain and youre afraid of the mouse. Youre a coward!" The fox kept making fun of the Lion.

Finally the lion spoke, "I wasnt afraid of the mouse. I was only shocked to find a bold enough animal not afraid to run around on top of a lion." When the fox heard this he quietly left.
