(1) French forces say they have entered Kidal in thenorth of Mali, (2) the last major town they have yetto secure in their drive against Islamist militants.French forces now control Kidal airport after anumber of aircraft, including helicopters, landedthere last night. Islamist militants were reported to have already left the town and it wasunclear who was in charge. (2) France—the former colonial power in Mali—launched a militaryoperation this month after Islamist militants appeared to be threatening the south. Frencharmy spokesman confirms that "French troops were deployed overnight in Kidal". One regionalsecurity source told the Press that French aircraft had landed at Kidal and that protectionhelicopters are in the sky. Kidal, 930 miles north-east of the capital Bamako, was until recentlyunder the control of the Islamist militants.
