Down-to-earth persons may be(4)___members of society,of course. But they do not let their importance“(5)___to their heads”.They do not consider themselves to be better persons than(6) ___of less importance.Someone who is filled with his own importance and pride,(7) ___without cause,is said to have“his nose in the air”.There is(8) way a person with his nose in the air can be down-to-earth.

Americans(9) ___ another expression that means almost the same as“down—to-earth”.The expression is“both—feet—on-the—ground”. Someone(10) ___both—feet—on—the-ground is a person with a good understanding(11) ___reality.He has what iscalled“common sense,”he may have dreams,(12) ___he does not allow them to block his knowledge of(13) ___is real.

Theoppositekind of(14) ___is one who has his“head—in-the—clouds”. A man with his head-in-the—clouds is a dreamer(15) ___mind is not in the real world.

1.someone【解析】由本文的第一句話“‘Down-to-earth’means some—one or something that is honest, realistic and easy to deal with.”可知“Down—to—earth”指的是誠(chéng)實(shí),現(xiàn)實(shí)、平易近人的那些人。

A down—to—earth person和那些表面上裝的很重要的人物正好相反。

A down—to—earth person就算是重要的人物,他們也不會(huì)把這種顯赫寫(xiě)在臉上。

  5.go【解析】go to one’s heads的意思是“展現(xiàn)、表現(xiàn)”,俗語(yǔ)。

例如:98年的第三篇閱讀文章中有這樣一句話: "A survey of new stories in 1996 reveals that the antiscience tag has been attached to many other groups as well, from authorities who advocated the elimination of the last remaining stocks of smallpox virus to Republicans who advocated decreased funding for basic research."

這個(gè)句子主句的主體是 a survey reveals that…。從句的結(jié)構(gòu)比較復(fù)雜:主語(yǔ)是the antiscience tag(反科學(xué)的標(biāo)簽),謂語(yǔ)是 has been attached to(被貼到),賓語(yǔ)是many other groups,后面用了一個(gè)from sb. who… to sb. who…

Today, stepladders carry labels several inches long that warn, among other things, that you might - surprise! - fall off. "

  從句的`主語(yǔ)是that(也就是labels),謂語(yǔ)是warn,賓語(yǔ)又是另一個(gè)that引導(dǎo)的從句,在warn和賓語(yǔ)從句中插入 among other things,表示賓語(yǔ)的內(nèi)容只是在warn(被警告的)眾多內(nèi)容中列舉的一個(gè)。這個(gè)被列舉的內(nèi)容是fall off(摔下來(lái)),但在fall off之前又插入了一個(gè)surprise!,插入這個(gè)詞是因?yàn)樽髡哒J(rèn)為梯子警告fall off是件令人吃驚的事,因?yàn)榕捞葑颖緛?lái)就有摔下來(lái)的危險(xiǎn),但商家為了怕消費(fèi)者控告,竟然將這么明顯的事情也寫(xiě)進(jìn)了警告語(yǔ)。

這個(gè)句子的閱讀順序應(yīng)該是:第一層 stepladders carry labels several inches long that,第二層是 that warn that you might fall off,最后再看兩個(gè)插入的部分among other things和 surprise!

  III.
