Population aging, which has made it difficult for many companies to recruit eligible young employees, pushes people to rethink whether compulsory retirement has been out-of-date. In my opinion, we should abolish this regulation and create more flexible legal articles instead, to protect the benefits of both workers and employers.
One of the reasons is that mandatory retirement results in a huge waste of human resources. People differ in innate talents, physical conditions and career types, so a unified requirement for their retiring age will probably prevent them from continually contributing to the society. For example, an elder prestigious professor will be required to stop working when he reaches the age for retirement, no matter how well his body function is and how enthusiastic of him to commit to his job. It is counterproductive for him to realize potential to the utmost and achieve a sense of accomplishment, thereby causing a waste of his knowledge and intelligence.
This regulation is likely to lead to skills gap in many corporations and end with the shortfall of capital. This is particularly the case for companies in high-technology area, in which the manager needs to spend lots of money and effort on recruiting and training new workers after the old stuff retire, especially when young talents are more and more difficult to find under the aging trend. Consequently, the lower quality of work outputs at the meantime will exert a detrimental effect on their financial power and competitiveness.
Some people may argue that if the mandatory retirement is abolished, the benefits that employees are endowed with will be easily disregarded. It is possible for them to suffer from labor exploitation of greedy superiors, and be required to take large amount of workloads to maximize companies’ interests. As a result, they are deprived the chance of enjoying the happiness of family reunion and are at greater risks of sickness. In my mind, however, this concern can be addressed through specific legislation, like setting rules specialized in labor-incentive works, but intellectual works should be in the same case.
As suggested above, considering the potential damages which are brought by compulsory retirement, it should be abolished.

Introduce the mentioned opinion and give your own recent years, animal protection has become an issue of concern. People take different attitudes toward the increasing attention and expenditure on wildlife
conservation. Some People suggest that the spending should be redirected to helping other fields in our society. I agree with the view that the investment in wildlife protection is not worthwhile.
Give specific Reason and details for the opinion mentioned in the question.
Animals, as a key component of the whole food chain, have a profound impact on the sustainability of an ecosystem. As we know, every kind of animals plays an important role in natural example, the demise of any species will lead to the species will lead to the growth or decline of other some extreme cases, some species may be at the verge of extinction such as Dodo bird. If people did not take actions to protect wildlife as soon as possible, we humans will be affected in the end.
Give specific Reason and details for the opinion of yourself.
However, there are more issues that we need to focus in our society rather than protecting current social context, the primacy task is still to improve living standards since there are many people living under the poverty when people are in a good living condition can they pay attention to other social technology and education are another two aspects for governments to concern, These two industries accelerate the development of society, which will provide a better protection for wildlife in turn.
In conclusion, although the animal is a significant part of ecosystem, it’s better for governments to invest more finance and resources in other social problems.

If people are asked why students go to university, I believe that many of the answers would be: to find a good job! It is true that job commitment is an important function of higher education. However, I think it has other functions.
For one thing, students learn to be independent in university. For many, if not all, of my schoolmates, entering university is the first time to leave home and live on their own. It is hard for them at first, but to my mind this is certainly an essential part of ones life, or else they may continue to receive parental care without getting mature as early as they should.
For another thing, students know better how to get along with people during the four years university life. As we know, nowadays, many Chinese children are the only child at home and thus unlike people of the previous generations who have brothers and sisters, they know little about how to be tolerant and considerate to people around them. There is no doubt that universities provide us with an opportunity to learn to do s for example, we have to think of others instead of only ourselves when we share a dormitory room with others.
Lastly, besides imparting knowledge, university teachers also tell their students how to be a decent person in the rest of their life. For instance, students may learn how to be generous, think critically, be responsible for themselves, their family and work, etc. It is not a rare case for a student to change for the better under the influence of his university teacher.
To conclude, university education does not only prepare the students for a future job, but also teaches them important things that are to be useful all their life.

In the year 1780, a river that ran/went along the north-south direction stretched through the western periphery/edge of the village. Immediately to its east was a vast expanse/plot/tract of farmland where farmers engaged in agricultural activities. The northeastern corner of the village was occupied by residential buildings that accommodated around 100 families. Overlooking from the homes to the south lay a sprawl of woods that took up almost a quarter of the land area of the village.
By the year 1860, significant/tremendous changes had taken place in the layout of settlements in the village. A bridge was built over the river, facilitating the communications and interactions between people on either side of the river. The area of farmland was halved to give way to the construction of a new road linking the river bank to the homes, whose number also doubled over the span of 80 years to 200. The tract of woodland was also significantly reduced, giving rise to vast areas of open, unused land.
The village indicated clear, visible signs of modern infrastructure in the year 2000. The population increased by nearly twofold, attaining 500. On the previously open land erected schools and sports fields for children to receive education and play sports. A new road was set up to make the travel between residential areas and schools more convenient. Whats more, a line/stretch of shops was established along the eastern river bank in the downstream, heralding the advent of a commercial era. More impressively, a wetland formed at the southern end of the river, providing a shelter for birds in the region that retained the last vestige of the pristine nature amidst the full force of modernization elsewhere.

Research indicates that the characteristics we are born with have much more influence on our personality and development than any experiences we may have in our life. Which do you consider to be the major influence?
Today the way we consider human psychology and mental development is heavily influenced by the genetic sciences. We now understand the importance of inherited characteristics more than ever before. Yet we are still unable to decide whether an individual’s personality and development are more influenced by genetic factors(nature) or by the environment (nurture).
Research, relating to identical twins, has highlighted how significant inherited characteristics can be for an individual’s life. But whether these characteristics are able to develop within the personality of an individual surely depends on whether the circumstances allow such a development. It seems that the experiences we have in life are so unpredictable and so powerful, that they can boost or over-ride other influences, and there seems to be plenty of research findings to confirm this.
My own view is that there is no one major influence in a person’s life. Instead, the traits we inherit from our parents and the situations and experiences that we encounter in life are constantly interacting. It is the interaction of the two that shapes a person’s personality and dictates how that personality develops. If this were not true, then we would be able to predict the behavior and character of a person from the moment they were born.
In conclusion, I do not think that either nature or nurture is the major influence on a person, but that both nave powerful effects. How these factors interact is still unknown today and they remain largely unpredictable in a person’s life.

The fast increase in the number of cars havebrought along many related problems which are wellworth our greatest attention.
First of all, urban traffic is getting from bad to worse. I’d like to cite my own experience asan example. Five years ago, it took me about 30 minutes to drive from home to office. Oneyear later, I needed to spend about 40 minutes on the way. Then two years later, I had tostart out from home at least 1 hour earlier in order to get to my office on good time for work. And then, since last year, it has just been too normal for me to spend about one and half hoursto make it. The traffic just moves like a worm!
Second, with the ever growing number of cars, air quality in urban areas is deterioratingwith each passing day. We used to see clear blue sky and breathe fresh air, but now this wouldbe a real luxury. Car exhaust has seriously polluted the air and people’s health is greatlyendangered. It seems certain that we human beings have already made a fatal mistake thatcould only be remedied by bringing down the number of cars hugely.
Sure, we can not deny the fact that cars have brought us speed, comfort and greatermobility. However, these have already been history. We are suffering much more from carsthan benefiting from them. Our health conditions are going down rapidly both due to thepolluted air that we have to breathe every second and our lack of exercise as a result of theever increasing amount of time we have to spend behind the wheel!
What can we do? From the foregoing discussion, I’m sure we have already found asolution: to discourage people to use cars! I know very well that science and technology arealso developing very fast and there might be better solutions coming up in the future, but, before that, let’s first salvage ourselves in such a passive way!

Tuning to the BBC or CNN, one is besieged by (news about) formidable disasters, diseases, conflicts, and controversies. But none is more challenging than the shortage of fresh water, a source which has long been mistakenly assumed to be inexhaustible. Unfortunately, few people realize the impending potential catastrophe arising from the insufficient fresh water. Governments must be blamed if they have not informed people the importance of fresh water.
Fresh water has been closed associated with life, not only the life of human beings, but also the life of all kinds of plants and animals. Lacking fresh water, the earth will become ill. Nevertheless, human beings are confronted with the crisis of insufficient fresh water.
The shortage of fresh water can be attributed to the lower efficiency in water utilization. The irrigation in many countries wastes overwhelmingly. Some developing countries still use the primitive irrigation system, which is believed to waste at least 70% fresh water.
Life water utilization also shows strikingly lower efficiency. Many citizens have no concept of saving water. In most cities in China, fresh water is used to flush lavatories. Moreover, most citizens use wash-machine, which consumes a larger volume of fresh water.
Besides, fresh water has been polluted by agriculture and industry activities. Aquatic(水)ecosystem has largely been ruined by unrestricted drainage (排水)of sewages (污水). In metropolis (big cities大都市), the hospitals and laboratories are also the serious sources of water pollution.
Governments are expected to launch campaigns against water pollution. Individuals, households, and the states all should use their unique ways to save the limited resources.

Schools are places where students acquire knowledge and skills needed for further achievements. Given the pressure that students are facing, some cannot help wondering whether art classes should still be compulsory.
Those holding the view that art classes should not be compulsory might think that art consumes too much of students time. Fierce competitions students will face When applying for universities necessitate total devotion to academic subjects. College students who intend to take science as their major are even expected to be fluent in foreign languages now so that essays written by foreign scholars are not barriers in their academic pursuit. In other words, high school students are supposed to show higher levels of academic competence, which seemingly makes art unessential.
However, art classes are by no means only intended for entertainment. Children even dabbling in art tend to be more creative in mind. Those skilled in music or painting can interpret the world in a way that we cannot expect from a layman. This kind of ingenuity is also a rare quality constantly found in great scientists, whose contributions have served to create a totally new field for the latter generations. In his reply to a question about death, Albert Einstein considered his departure from the mortal world to be forever farewell to another great musician. With a sigh he answered "I cannot listen to Mozart anymore". Thus, can we simply regard art classes to be selective?
In conclusion, although stricter academic requirements are imposed on students, this cannot be an excuse for excluding art subjects from their curricula. Whatever kind of art can stimulate and inspire students, paving way for their future academic attainment.

The statement that teachers outnumber other resources such asinternetor television programs in terms of how much student can learn on campus is too presumptuous.
How much student can learn depends not only on the resources of knowledge or information but also on students themselves and the environment in which they learn. In some leading universities or schools, the academic staffs are usually outstanding leaders in their subjects, and the campus is well equipped with various facilities to help live and learn. In this case, it is often true that students in general are able to learn morefromteachers thanfromother resources. This also explains why so many bright young people pay high tuitions to graduate or professional programs.
Certainly, not all teachers are qualified. In some hinterland or remote areas, educational staffs and facilities are rather scarce. Teachers are usually those who themselves are lesswell educated. In this case, to learnfromthese teachers is less effective or even negative. This accounts for why so many parents spendall of their money in renting a small room in the slums or ghettoes in Beijing, China close to universities to help children learn more and better.
These, however, should not be the absolute conclusion. The fact is that some students can learn wellfromboth resources, while others fail in either.
In conclusion, I do not agree the argument that at schools students can learn much morefromteachers than other resources. In fact, it depends.

Every year, millions of animals undergo painful suffering or death as a result of scientific research into the effects of drugs, food additives, cosmetics and other chemical products. While most people think animal testing is necessary, others are upset by what they see as needless suffering. This essay looks at some of the positive and negative aspects of animal testing.
Many medical treatments and procedures have been developed from experiments on animals. Since animals share many features with humans, scientists use animals to test the safety and effectiveness of newly developed drugs before pilot testing on small groups of patients. Medical teams practice new operating techniques such as transplants on animals. Without animal testing, many procedures or new drugs would be extremely unsafe.
However, many people are concerned that animals are suffering unnecessarily and cruelly. They do not believe that every new drug needs to be tested on animals, especially with the huge database of knowledge and modern computer models. They also are worried that many animal tests are ineffective, pointing out that any drugs have had to be withdrawn from the market despite extensive testing. They particularly feel that animal testing should not be used for non-essential products such as cosmetics, shampoos, soaps, and cleaning products. Furthermore, some campaigners would like to see certain tests replaced and more humane methods used.

The advancement of modern technology is making peoples life more comfortable and at the same time less human. To those who enjoy the benefits of technology, there is no better time to be alive than now, but to others life has been increasingly complex and stressful. The issue is whether such new technological machines as computers and the Internet would be our servants forever or eventually could become our masters.
All kinds of inventions made possible by technology are designed to be the slaves of human beings, if human beings are not to be slaved by machines. Once upon a time, we were plain people, but that was before we began having relationships with technological systems. By getting involved with computerized machines, we could not help changing the way we live and the way we work, for better or for worse It can be realized that life is more complex because much of modern technology is not born to meet primary human needs, and many unnecessary inventions are producing negative effects on a living style that used to be relatively simple. Thus, there is an overwhelming feeling of complexity in the sense that machines act like humans and humans act like machines. Now that intelligent machines such as robots are widely applied to take the place of human beings because they are capable of doing many useful jobs, although making many people joblesss. Those who cannot work with computers are disadvantaged and therefore helpless while the traditional skills and simple ways of life are fading away, never to return again.

Computer, as the most powerful tool in 21 century,is widely used in education areas. Whethercomputers can instead of teachers become acontroversial issue. From my point, I don’t thinkcomputers can take the place of teachers.
First and foremost, computer cannot communicatewith students. Every human being has are not only teaching students knowledge but also showing their loves to studentswhen they are teaching. How to have a conversation with others and how to take care ofothers can be learned from teachers. For example, teacher can take you to the hospital whenyou are sick. In comparison, computers cannot likely to it.
Secondly, computers cannot help students when the get confused. Asking teachers is the bestway to do when students get any quires. However, computers do not have this is a two-way process, teachers can excite students’ imaginations and fire their creations.
Last but not least, computers cannot organize teaching activities instead of teachers. TakeEngland as an example, students need to do a lot of practical experiments, especially in physicsand chemistry. When they do these experiments, students usually work together as a groupand discuss with teachers. Team work is a very important part to shape students’ personalities.
From what has been discussed above, we might safely say that computers can never take theplace of teachers. We should always remember that human beings are the host of technologyand computer is a machine no matter how clever it is!

With the development of cities, more and more new buildings are appearing in the city. Some people claim that the government should ensure all the new buildings should be built in traditional styles. For me, I do not agree with this suggestion.
Undoubtedly, the old buildings can reflect our traditional culture and should be protected and built. They are the houses where the ancient people lived. By appreciating these old buildings, we can have a better understanding of our ancient culture and history.
However, I do not agree that all the new buildings should be built in traditional styles. First of all, a city’s culture identity consists of the past culture and the modern culture. While past culture can be represented by the traditional buildings, modern culture should be reflected by modern buildings. If all the new buildings are built in traditional styles, the modern culture may be lost in the city. Secondly, the style of the new building should be decided by a lot of factors such as location, function, and so on. For instance, it is impossible for us to build a modern shopping mall into traditional style, because there are a lot of famous brands inside. Thirdly, modern buildings can accommodate more people than traditional buildings, which can meet the increasing population.
Therefore, I agree that we should build some old buildings, but we should not build all the buildings into traditional styles. We should consider a lot of aspects before we make the final decision.

Over the last half century the pace of change in the life of human beings has increased beyond our wildest expectations. This has been driven by technology and scientific breakthroughs that are changing the whole way we view the world on an almost daily basis. This means that change is not always a personal option, but an inescapable fact of life, and we need to constantly adapt to keep pace with it.
Those people who believe they have achieved some security by doing the same, familiar things are living in denial. Even when people believe they are resisting change themselves, they cannot stop the world around them from changing. Sooner or later they will find that the familiar jobs no longer exist, or that the ‘safe’ patterns of behavior are no longer appropriate.
However, reaching the conclusion that change is inevitable is not the same as assuming that ‘change is always for the better’. Unfortunately, it is not always the case that new things are promoted because they have good impacts for the majority of people. A lot of innovations are made with the aim of making money for a few. This is because it is the rich and powerful people in our society who are able to impose changes (such as in working conditions or property developments) that are in their own interests.
In conclusion, I would say that change can be stimulating and energizing for individuals when they pursue it themselves, but that all change, including that which is imposed on people, does not necessary have good outcomes.

In recent years, more and more advertisements have been flooding into our lives. Some advertisements exert negative effects on the youth. Therefore some people suggest that advertisements be banned. Do you agree or disagree with this? Give your reasons.
Along with the rapid progress of society, the advertising industry has undergone remarkable development. Every day we are surrounded by all kinds of ads and commercials, which have a profound influence on our daily lives. As a result, there arises a fierce debate concerning the proposal that we should ban all kinds of advertisements.
On one hand, some people are in favor of the idea that advertisement should not be banned; instead it should be further developed. They are of the opinion that advertisement is a good channel which helps promote the exchanges of information. In an era of information, everyone can benefit a lot from the advertisements, not only the manufacturers but the customers. Moreover, the advertisement enables people to catch up with the amazing advance in all fields. From the mushrooming advertisements, people get to know some newest products and the trend of consumption. Thirdly, advertising, to some extent, is not only an industry but an art. Many advertisements are elaborate works of art full of ingenuity and originality, which render great spiritual pleasure to the viewers and add to the picturesque cityscape. In a word, the advertisement is a blessing for modern people.

The main factors responsible for the decreased productivity of agricultural land in North America, Europe, and Oceania during the 1990s were summarized in a pie chart and a table.
The most serious problem was over-grazing. It has caused the world to lose 35% of agriculture land. This problem is followed closely by deforestation and over-cultivation.
The area that has lost most proportion of its agriculture land was Europe at 23% However, Oceania and North America was not as badly affected, losing 13% and 5% of its farmland respectively.
Surprisingly, the main problem faced by each area is different from one another. The problem with over-grazing is especially serious in Oceania, resulting in 11.3% of its land unsuitable for agriculture. On the other hand, deforestation that caused 9.8% of agriculture land unusable was the major problem faced by the European farmers. Although over-cultivation was the primary threat in North America, it was not a problem at all in Oceania.
In conclusion, over-grazing was the main cause of worldwide degradation in 1990s. Europe’s percentage of degradation was largest of all three regions and all three regions had different predominant causes.

The charts below compare the age structure of the populations of France and India in 1984.
The two charts compare the populations of France and India in terms of age distribution by gender in the year 1984.
It is clear that the population of India was younger than that of France in 1984, with a noticeably larger proportion of people aged under 20. France, on the other hand, had a significantly larger percentage of elderly inhabitants.
In India, close to 14% of people were aged 5 or under, and each five-year age bracket above this contained an increasingly smaller proportion of the population. France’s population, by contrast, was more evenly distributed across the age ranges, with similar figures (around 7% to 8% of all people) for each five-year cohort between the ages of 0 and 40. Somewhere between 10% and 15% of all French people were aged 70 or older, but the equivalent figure for India was only 2%.
Looking more closely at gender, there was a noticeably higher proportion of French women than men in every cohort from age 50 upwards. For example, almost 3% of French 70- to 75-year-olds were women, while just under 2% were men. No significant gender differences can be seen on the Indian population chart.

The charts compare the sources of electricity in Australia and France in the years 1980 and 2000. During these years electricity production almost doubled, rising from 100 units to 170 in Australia, and from 90 to 180 units in France.
In 1980 Australia used coal as the main electricity source (50 units) and the remainder was produced from natural gas, hydro power (each producing 20 units) and oil (which produced only 10 units). By 2000, coal had become the fuel for more than 75% of electricity produced and only hydro power continued to be another significant source supplying approximately 20%.
In contrast, France used coal as a source for only 25 units of electricity in 1980, which was matched by natural gas. The remaining 40 units were produced largely from oil and nuclear power, with hydro power contributing only 5 units. But by 2000 nuclear power, which was not used at all in Australia, had developed into the main source, producing almost 75% of electricity, at 126 units, while coal and oil together produced only 50 units. Other sources were no longer significant.
Overall, it is clear that by 2000 these two countries relied on different principal fuel sources: Australia relied on coal and France on nuclear power.

It is obvious that advanced technologies such as cellular phones or the net not only bring a lot of fun to youngsters who are always passionate to novel things, but also have an important effect on the life of senior citizens who would like to keep the pace of the age.
Today, mobile phones are increasingly popular with old people. Unlike young people who fancy playing games or taking photos with phones, they seem to be most interested in their most basic function communication. It is easily found that keeping in touch by mobiles with their children who live independently or study overseas has become a necessary thing in their routines. Plus, if some of old people feel physically uncomfortable or get in danger outdoors and alone, they immediately make an emergency call or inform . their relatives or friends using mobile phones.
The Internet is equally important with mobile phone in old peoples life now. Apparently, some elderly tend to surf on Internet, studying something that they are fascinated with such as calligraphy , painting and so forth; some like to meet new people online or chat with their friends by tools available on Internet such as MSN or OICQ; others become accustomed to shopping online or running their own small businesses by E-bay.

The pie charts compare visitors’ responses to a survey about customer service at the Parkway Hotel in 2005 and in 2010.
It is clear that overall customer satisfaction increased considerably from 2005 to 2010. While most hotel guests rated customer service as satisfactory or poor in 2005, a clear majority described the hotel’s service as good or excellent in 2010.
Looking at the positive responses first, in 2005 only 5% of the hotel’s visitors rated its customer service as excellent, but this figure rose to 28% in 2010. Furthermore, while only 14% of guests described customer service in the hotel as good in 2005, almost three times as many people gave this rating five years later.
With regard to negative feedback, the proportion of guests who considered the hotel’s customer service to be poor fell from 21% in 2005 to only 12% in 2010. Similarly, the proportion of people who thought customer service was very poor dropped from 15% to only 4% over the 5-year period. Finally, a fall in the number of ‘satisfactory’ ratings in 2010 reflects the fact that more people gave positive responses to the survey in that year.
